Remember the Mi Max? Last year's behemoth, surprisingly impressive low-mid range phablet from Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi? We would forgive you if you'd forgotten by now, but if you're one of the many enthusiastic Mi Max owners, we have some excellent news for you.

Yshalsager, a developer over at the XDA developer forums, has ported Android 8.0 Oreo onto the Xiaomi Mi Mix, bringing all the new features and improvements of the latest version of Android onto the device. As Xiaomi hasn't been showing this device a lot of love (it only started receiving stable betas of Android 7.0 Nougat in June- 2 months ago), this is great news for many Mi Max owners who had possibly given up and lost all hope for their devices.

This unofficial port comes in part thanks to the unofficial Android Oreo port for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, which landed on the XDA developer forums a few days ago. Both devices house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650, which does not have official driver support higher than Android Marshmallow- meaning this port is significantly more impressive than other Oreo ports for various devices that have surfaced over the past few days.

However, this first port comes with the same slew of bugs and issues that the Redmi Note 3 port came with; which includes but is not limited to:

  • Lack of working WiFi hotspot
  • No USB tethering
  • Some random reboots and other stability issues
  • Lack of VoLTE functionality
  • (with some devices) lack of camera/flashlight functionality

If you want to fetch this ROM for your Xiaomi Mi Max and give it a new lease on its life, head over to this link on the XDA forums. Please do note that this is highly unstable pre-beta software, and neither the developer or ModMy will take any responsibility for bricked hardware. But other than that, be sure to tell us what you think in the comments or post in the forums if you have any more questions or inquiries.
