The Desktop-Mobile dream continues with Samsung's work on DeX

According to a trademark filed by Samsung, they have not given up on DeX, the tool that makes your Galaxy S8 or S8+ into a desktop computer. Instead, they have plans on continuing work on the platform allowing for it to be a real alternative to getting a computer. It is possible that in the new version of DeX, Samsung will be abandoning the traditional dock form factor.

The DeX Station was introduced alongside the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Users who forked over an additional $150 to get DeX were able to connect the station to a monitor and also connect a mouse and keyboard in order to use the phone like a Desktop PC.

On December 29th, Samsung registered a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for "DEX PAD". This trademark shows that it is possible that a new DeX accessory is on the way with the launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9+. It also suggests that the new station could be more like a wireless charging pad instead of the traditional dock look. This makes the phone sit flat instead of upright allowing for a wide range of possibilities that could tie the phone in more for the use of the desktop mode.

SamMobile who also wrote about the trademark stated that it is possible that the new form factor is in order to make the phone a touchpad for the desktop environment by getting rid of the need to keep a mouse around while using DeX. This still leaves the need for a keyboard and a monitor, maybe Samsung is working on a solution that gets rid of those too. I guess we will have to wait and find out.

Did you buy a DeX when it first came out? Are you excited about a new version? And will you be looking into the new DeX station when it comes out and possibly buy it?
